Careers in Computing

In the present job market Computing Science graduates are better placed than many others to obtain employment in a challenging and fulfilling career. Specialists are recruited by computer manufacturers and software houses (who write programs for customers), and all graduates with good knowledge of computing may be employed by any organization which uses computers on a large scale - banks, insurance companies, the electronics industry, central and local government, and management in all areas of business. A significant number of our undergraduates also continue with their studies as MSc or PhD students.

We have one of the best Careers Services in the country, which provides services and support to help you make the most of yourself.

Over 40% of jobs for graduates do not depend on the degree that you have studied, but on the skills that you have as a graduate, so it's important to take up the opportunities that we offer while you are here.

Work Experience

Our degrees are not sandwich courses, but if you wish to spend a year in industry between your second and third years we encourage you to do so.

The School has many contacts with local and national companies and can help make suitable arrangements for taking a year out. Some students are sponsored by leading organisations, which offer the opportunity for valuable work experience in industry during vacation periods. Several firms also provide input to our degree programmes via the professional issues module in the second year.

More information about the career prospects for our [ undergraduates ] [ postgraduates ] is available on the Newcastle University website.
