Entry Requirements
It is not necessary for applicants to have previous experience of, or qualifications in computing. It is more important to have a real interest in the subject - both its practical and intellectual aspects. We take applicants with a wide range of qualifications and backgrounds and welcome applications from mature and international students. Applicants with a disability are considered on the same academic grounds as other candidates. Further information about the support available for applicants with a disability is available on the University website.
Undergraduates
Our undergraduate degree programmes normally require at least a grade B in maths at GCSE or equivalent, or a pass in BTEC Quantitative Methods, if you do not have a more advanced maths qualification. The grades required can vary from year to year so you should refer to the University entrance requirements for the particular programme you are interested in. Specific information about the validity of particular qualifications can also be found here. If you are still uncertain about whether your qualifications are suitable you should contact us before applying.
Mature students (people aged 21 or over at the time of entry) are also welcome. Many Colleges of Further Education run Access to HE courses which equip successful candidates for entry to our degree programmes. Further information for mature students with alternative qualifications can be found here.
International students with sufficient experience in both maths and computing may be eligible for direct entry to the second year. A bridging course for international students, run in conjunction with Newcastle College, is available for those without the necessary background in maths and computing. It also provides English language tuition. Further information about the validity of international qualifications is here.
Taught Postgraduate Programmes
Admission to our taught postgraduate degrees is not solely on the basis of academic criteria. We also consider other information provided by you when you apply, which indicates your potential to succeed on these degree programmes.
The normal entry requirement for the MSc Computing Science (Conversion) is a second class honours degree in any subject. However applicants with an non-scientific background should have at least an upper second class honours degree.
Normal entrance requirements for the MSc in System Design for Internet Applications (SDIA) will be at least a second class honours degree (2:1 preferable) in Computing Science or Joint Honours in two subjects one of which is Computing Science. Non-computing science graduates with several years of relevant industrial computing experience will also be considered.
The MRes in Bioinformatics is a full-time, one-year advanced course and normally requires students to have a good degree in biological sciences.
PhD and MPhil
To be considered for admission for either the PhD or MPhil programme, an applicant must hold a first or upper second class honours degree from a British University, or a Master's degree or qualifications of comparable standing in a relevant subject.
