Distributed Systems

We believe in constructing realistic distributed systems (each taking several years of sustained experimental work) to demonstrate the applicability of our ideas on robust distributed computing. Our best known effort is the Arjuna distributed object transaction system (more than twelve years research effort, 85-98). Other systems include OpenFlow transactional workflow management system, NewTop group communication system for atomic broadcasts and Voltan replicated processing system capable of tolerating Byzantine failures. Results from work on Arjuna have been commercialised by our group’s spin-off company, Arjuna Technologies (www.arjuna.com). In 2000, Professor Shrivastava and his team received the British Computer Society Award for Arjuna. We have close working relationships with the Dependability group (Profs. Jones, Anderson) and the Grid research group of Prof. P. Watson, who directs the North East Regional e-Science Centre.

More information about the group can be found on their website.
