Internet Background Radiation as seen from the Southern Hemisphere

Speaker: Ian Welch

19th April 2006 , 2pm , 701 Claremont Tower

Abstract

Internet Background Radiation (IBR) is composed of unsolicited packets arriving at your network. Typical causes are scans, worms, mapping attempts or misconfiguration of other machines. This seminar looks at work on using a network telescope to collect IBR data from a New Zealand perspective. This work is part of a MSc project by Dean Pemberton who is supervised by me and Peter Komisarczuk. This talk discusses observations based upon a years worth of data (roughly 20G) and initial work on using the collected data to answer questions about the proper placement of network telescopes.
