Human Interaction and Collaboration in Automated and Autonomous Systems.

Abstract

Current Human Factors and Human Computer Interaction paradigms are challenged by systems with increased levles of automated and autonomous components. The increased levels of agency that occur in automated and autonomous systems raise questions of awareness, intention, and trust. This requires interaction design to support joint action between people and automated and autonomous components. Examples of breakdowns in automated aviation systems are used to show how concepts supporting collaboration through increased awareness of intention lead to particular redesigns and illustrate the direction of paradigm change. The relevance of this to the development of awareness of intention and trust in autonomous systems is considered.
