'Bruce Willis is Braver than You Think': New Techniques for Analysing Software Failures in NASA's Space Missions

Speaker: Chris Johnson

26th February 2004 , 2:00pm , Room 118, Claremont Tower

Abstract

I'll talk about a joint project with NASA Langley to develop analysis techniques that can be used to identify the causes of failures involving complex programmable systems. In particular, I will look at a joint analysis of the Mars Surveyor `mishaps' and the SOHO observatory mission interruption. I can also briefly discuss more recent initiatives such as the new NASA safety centre being set up after the Columbia accident report.
