How to Live Beyond Your Means: Extracting Response Time Densities and Quantiles from Stochastic Models

Speaker: Will Knottenbelt

19th February 2004 , 1pm , Room 519 Claremont Tower

Abstract

Response time quantiles are important performance and quality of service metrics increasingly specified in contracts and Service Level Agreements (e.g. 95% of text messages must be delivered in under three seconds). This talk considers analytical methods for calculating response time densities and quantiles in Markov and semi-Markov chains derived from Stochastic Petri net models using numerical Laplace Transform inversion. We also consider efficient parallel implementation using hypergraph partitioning. Results are presented for very large Markov and semi-Markov models with over 15 million states and validated against simulation.
