Library

The library's main function is to provide a back-up service for teaching and research, supplementing the main University Library (the Robinson Library) and holding much material not available in the main library (e.g. proceedings of many conferences on computing topics).

The stock includes some 4,000 books, about 65 current journal subscriptions, 800 conference proceedings, about 8,000 reports from various institutions. We are an institutional member of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), which publishes a large number of specialised journals.

The library is on the 9th floor of the Claremont Tower, and is staffed by a chartered librarian, Miss Shirley Craig, ALA. It is open to all members of the University. It is open from 8.45 a.m. until 5.00 p.m. Monday to Friday (both during term-time and in the vacations), and is only closed on Bank Holidays, and from Christmas to New Year.

Rules

Most of the publications in the library are available for loan, the exceptions being current issues of journals and anything marked "For reference only". A pink library form must be completed for each item borrowed. Loans are for up to 3 months, but books may be recalled earlier if requested by another reader.

Organisation

The Library provides card catalogues for author and subject searches. Our catalog numbers are the same standard used by the Robinson Library, stripped of their common 518 prefix.

University Library

The University library website provides resources for the Science, Agriculture and Engineering Faculty, and for Computing Science. The main library catalogue may be accessed over the campus network, as can many major database services. The Librarian can register staff and students for the BIDS and COMPENDEX systems.
